Portraits of Citizens in Ukraine

The New York Times Magazine photo essay “In Photos: Citizens of Kyiv” features portraits of citizens of all walks of life in Kyiv, a city currently under siege by the Russian military. The portraits are powerful and capable of evoking empathy in the viewer. Depicting single, identified individuals, these portraits engage the singularity effect, a psychological phenomenon that causes us to feel increased compassion for one person compared to a group of people. As inspiring as the photographs and stories of these individuals are, it is important to remember the faceless vulnerable as well, in Ukraine and around the world.
